Fear is an emotional & physiological behavioral reaction to unknown. Fear is a acquired reaction and many of us learn to fear things that are not really a threat to our survival.
Phobias are very common. One out of every eight people suffers from phobia. Phobia is an illogical fear of specific object, activity or situation. According to medical dictionary there are 289 known phobias. The symptoms of phobias are palm sweating, high pulse rate & anxiety. In extreme cases people may faces panic attack.
Phobia can appropriately be defined as fear of fear. Some common examples are fear of closed places (claustrophobia), fear of strangers (xenophobia), fear of darkness (achluophobia), fear of noise (acoustic phobia), fear of heights (batophobia), fear of water etc.
There are three different forms of Phobias.
Specific – When there is a specific object or situation causing the fear, Like fear of dogs, fear of heights or fear of flying.
Social – This is the most common type of fear. It is considered an anxiety disorder and excessive self-consciousness in social situations like some people can fear of being judged so they avoid specific situations, like talking or eating in front of others.
Agoraphobia – People with agoraphobia have the fear of being in a place or situation in that they perceived hard to escape from. It is a serious anxiety disorder. It can trap people in their homes.
People With agoraphobia might worry when they are in public transportation, in open spaces, in closed spaces, in crowd or being outside home alone.
Other common phobias are:
• Trypophobia – The fear of holes
• Aerophobia – The fear of flying
• Mysophobia – The fear of germs
• Claustrophobia – The fear of small spaces Astraphobia – The fear of thunder and lightning
• Cynophobia – The fear of dogs
• Agoraphobia – The fear of open or crowded spaces
• Acrophobia – The fear of heights
• Ophidiophobia – The fear of snakes
• Arachnophobia – The fear of spiders
People who have any type of phobia are in constant worry that they will encounter the object or situation that they fear. Their entire focus on how to avoid that particular object or situation and if they do come across it, they faces high levels of distress, nausea, shortness of breath and even panic attacks.
